Where Is Mr. Right? Review: When the Search for Love Takes a Dark Turn

Finding love is one thing. Finding the right person is another.

For Bunmi, the successful event planner at the centre of Where Is Mr. Right?, marriage has become much more than a personal desire. It has become an obsession, a family expectation and, at times, almost a measure of whether she has truly made it in life.

That is what makes Where Is Mr. Right? interesting from the beginning. What looks like another lighthearted Nollywood story about a woman searching for love gradually becomes something far more complicated.

Directed by Tunde Olaoye and produced under the Funke Akindele Network, the 2026 romantic comedy-drama stars Omowunmi Dada, Funke Akindele, Bisola Aiyeola, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Nosa Rex. The movie premiered on Prime Video on August 15, 2026.

What Is Where Is Mr. Right? About?

Omowunmi Dada plays Bunmi, a successful woman in her 30s whose career is doing well but whose love life is a completely different story.

She desperately wants to get married and have a family of her own. The pressure isn’t coming from just one direction either. There are family expectations, religious influences and the constant reminder that people around her seem to be moving ahead with their relationships while she remains single.

Her desperation becomes increasingly obvious as she searches for her “Mr. Right,” even participating in church activities specifically hoping to meet the man she will eventually marry.

Then she becomes fascinated by her neighbours, Bridget and Femi. From the outside, they appear to have the kind of relationship Bunmi wants for herself.

But as Bunmi gets closer to them, she begins to discover that things are not always what they seem behind closed doors.

Her situation changes again when Bridget introduces her to her brother, Dexy, played by Blossom Chukwujekwu. Dexy has returned to Nigeria for his 50th birthday, and Bunmi is brought in to plan the celebration.

There is an immediate connection between the two.

For Bunmi, it looks like she may finally have found the man she has been waiting for.

Then everything changes.

When the Romance Turns Into Something Else

One of the biggest surprises about Where Is Mr. Right? is just how far it moves away from the romantic comedy setup.

The first part gives viewers the familiar ingredients: marriage pressure, funny conversations, family expectations, church, neighbours and the excitement of possibly finding love.

Then the story takes a much darker road.

A domestic confrontation involving Bridget and Femi leads to a shocking death, pulling Dexy and the people around him into a dangerous situation. From there, the movie becomes increasingly concerned with deception, secrets, manipulation and the consequences of trying to hide the truth.

That sudden change in direction is arguably the movie’s biggest talking point.

Some viewers have appreciated the fact that the film refuses to follow the predictable romantic-comedy formula. Others have felt that the transition is too abrupt, with the crime-thriller elements appearing to belong to a completely different movie. Premium Times similarly noted that the twist gives the film unpredictability but argued that the screenplay could have planted more clues earlier to make the developments feel more natural.

And that is probably the safest thing to know before watching this movie: don’t assume you know where it is going simply because of the title.

Omowunmi Dada Carries the Story

Omowunmi Dada is arguably the biggest reason Bunmi remains watchable even when her decisions become increasingly questionable.

She manages to make the character’s desperation feel believable. Bunmi isn’t simply saying that she wants to get married; you can see how badly she wants it.

That desperation also becomes part of the problem.

She is so focused on finding a husband that she sometimes overlooks warning signs that might otherwise be obvious. The movie uses this to explore an uncomfortable question: when someone wants something badly enough, can that desire make them ignore what is right in front of them?

The Nollywood Reporter praised Dada’s performance and described Bunmi as one of the film’s strongest elements, while TheCable also singled out her ability to convincingly portray the character’s desperation and vulnerability.

Blossom Chukwujekwu also makes an impression as Dexy, while Bisola Aiyeola and Nosa Rex help give the story much of its tension once the seemingly perfect neighbourhood begins to fall apart.

The Real Story Is Bigger Than Finding a Husband

Despite the twists and suspense, Where Is Mr. Right? is ultimately built around a very familiar Nigerian conversation: the pressure placed on women to get married.

Bunmi is successful. She has a career. She is financially independent. Yet there is still this feeling that something is missing because she isn’t married.

That idea gives the film its strongest foundation.

The movie asks whether marriage should be treated as an achievement, whether being single automatically means something is wrong, and whether the desperation to find a partner can cause someone to overlook important red flags.

The Nollywood Reporter particularly highlighted this theme, noting that the film examines the cultural expectation that marriage remains a measure of social acceptance and respect for women.

There is also an interesting contrast between appearance and reality.

Bunmi looks at couples around her and sees what she wants. But the more she gets involved in their lives, the more she discovers that what looks like a perfect relationship from the outside may be hiding serious problems.

That is probably the film’s most relatable idea.

Where the Movie Stumbles

Where Is Mr. Right? takes an ambitious turn, but the execution isn’t always as smooth as the idea.

The biggest issue raised by several reviews is the tonal shift.

The first half establishes a fairly conventional romantic comedy about marriage and relationships. The second half becomes much darker and more complicated. For some viewers, that unpredictability makes the film more entertaining. For others, the change makes the story feel disconnected.

TheCable described the movie as a “mixed bag of brilliance, confusion,” particularly pointing to an ending that leaves some situations and characters without enough explanation.

NollyCritic also praised the overall construction of the interconnected story while criticizing some of the dialogue and its tonal fit with the darker material.

There is also a controversial dream element toward the end that has divided viewers and critics. Some felt it weakened the impact of everything that came before it, while others saw it as part of the movie’s attempt to play with expectations.

So, if you prefer movies that carefully build toward their twists and explain every major development, this one may leave you with a few questions.

Phisk Watch Review

Where Is Mr. Right? is one of those Nollywood movies that is probably more enjoyable when you know as little as possible before pressing play.

The premise sounds familiar: successful single woman wants love and marriage.

But that isn’t where the movie stays.

Its strongest quality is its willingness to take a familiar Nigerian subject and push it into unexpected territory. The performances, particularly Omowunmi Dada’s portrayal of Bunmi, give the story enough emotional weight to keep you invested.

The biggest weakness is that the movie sometimes seems unsure how far it wants to take its darker ideas. The transition from romantic comedy to crime drama is bold, but it isn’t always seamless, and the ending may leave some viewers wondering whether the film’s final twist actually adds to the story.

Still, there is something refreshing about a movie that refuses to give you exactly what you expect.

Phisk Watch Rating: 6.5/10

Not a perfect movie, but definitely one that gives you something to talk about after the credits.

Final Thoughts

At its heart, Where Is Mr. Right? isn’t really asking whether Bunmi will find a husband.

It is asking what happens when the desire to find “the right man” becomes so strong that you stop asking whether the situation itself is right.

That makes the movie more than just another Nollywood romance.

It is funny in places, uncomfortable in others, and unexpectedly dark when you least expect it. You may not agree with every decision the story makes, especially toward the end, but you are unlikely to forget the direction it takes.

And perhaps that is the film’s biggest trick.

You start watching because you want to know where Mr. Right is.

By the time the story is over, you may be asking a very different question:

Who can you actually trust?
