Painted Hearts is a Nollywood romantic drama available on Uduak Isong TV, starring Ekama Etim Inyang, Osereme, Ichie Fuego and Yemi Blaq.
The 1-hour, 44-minute film explores love, financial dependence, infidelity, domestic abuse and the complications that can arise when two people who have spent years together begin to grow apart.
Produced and executive produced by Uduak Isong Oguamanam, Painted Hearts attempts to tell a story about a woman caught between a long-term relationship and an unexpected emotional connection with someone else. Unfortunately, while the premise has room for a compelling relationship drama, the execution leaves quite a lot to be desired.
What Is Painted Hearts About?
The story follows Temilade, a 32-year-old artist who has been in a relationship with Ethan for three years.
The couple already have plans to get married, but their relationship is far from perfect. Ethan does not have a stable job and depends heavily on Temilade financially. Although he is involved in cryptocurrency, he isn’t contributing much to the household expenses.
Things become even more complicated because Ethan is unfaithful and abusive towards Temilade.
Temilade’s situation begins to change when she lands a major contract from Badmus, a much older man who becomes an important part of her professional and personal life.
At first, Badmus is reluctant to pursue anything romantic with Temilade. The age difference is significant—he is roughly 20 years older than her—and he has his own complicated past. He is also a widower who never had children.
But as Temilade spends more time around Badmus, her feelings begin to change, creating a difficult emotional situation that forces her to reconsider the relationship she has spent three years building with Ethan.
And this is where Painted Hearts attempts to explore its central questions: How much should someone endure for love? What happens when the person you planned your future with becomes the person holding you back? And can a new relationship offer an escape from an unhealthy one?
The Problem With the Story
The premise of Painted Hearts isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, there is enough material here for a powerful relationship drama.
The problem is that the movie doesn’t dig deeply enough into most of its ideas.
The storyline is relatively straightforward, and viewers can figure out where things are heading quite early. There are no major twists or significant surprises to keep the audience guessing.
For a movie running for almost two hours, that becomes noticeable.
Instead of gradually developing the characters and allowing their decisions to create genuine suspense, the film moves along a fairly predictable path. Once the dynamics between Temilade, Ethan and Badmus become clear, there isn’t much left for the audience to discover.
Temilade’s Life as an Artist Needed More Attention
One of the biggest missed opportunities is Temilade’s career.
We are told that she is an artist and that she receives a significant contract from Badmus, but the movie doesn’t do enough to make us believe in that aspect of her life.
Her home, which appears to be that of a struggling young artist, doesn’t particularly communicate the life of someone who is serious about painting. We don’t get enough scenes showing her actually working, developing her art, dealing with clients or trying to build her career.
That makes her professional journey feel more like a plot device than an important part of her character.
The movie could have used Temilade’s artistic career to tell us more about who she is—her ambitions, struggles and independence—and to show how her growing success changes her relationship with Ethan.
Instead, the film mostly tells us that she is an artist rather than allowing us to experience that part of her life.
Ethan and Temilade’s Relationship
The relationship between Temilade and Ethan is arguably where the movie has some of its strongest dramatic material.
Three years together and plans for marriage suggest a deep connection, but Ethan’s dependence on Temilade, infidelity and abusive behaviour gradually expose how unhealthy their relationship has become.
It creates an important contrast between the relationship Temilade has invested years in and the possibility of something different with Badmus.
However, the film could have gone much deeper into why Temilade stayed with Ethan for so long despite the problems.
Understanding that emotional attachment would have made her eventual change of heart feel more powerful.
Badmus and the Age Difference
Badmus is an interesting character because he doesn’t immediately jump into a relationship with Temilade.
His reluctance makes sense within the story. He is significantly older than her, has already experienced the loss of his wife and has never had children.
His hesitation gives the relationship a little more complexity than simply presenting him as the older man who suddenly falls for a younger woman.
But again, the movie doesn’t explore these elements as deeply as it could have.
Badmus’ past, his loneliness and his decision to open himself up to Temilade could have provided some of the film’s strongest emotional moments.
Instead, those aspects remain relatively underdeveloped.
Bimbo’s Character
Badmus’ sister, Bimbo, is another character who raises questions.
The film establishes that she has a husband and children, yet we never really see that part of her life. Most of what we see is Bimbo around Badmus’ home, making her character feel strangely isolated from the world outside it.
Her relationship with Badmus could have been used to reveal more about his personality and family history, but the movie doesn’t make enough use of it.
As a result, Bimbo sometimes feels like a character included to serve the story rather than someone with a fully developed life of her own.
Acting and Performances
The cast does what it can with the material.
Ekama Etim Inyang carries much of the film as Temilade, while Yemi Blaq brings his experience to the role of Badmus. Osereme and Ichie Fuego also contribute to the relationship dynamics.
There are moments where the performances work, particularly when the story focuses on the emotional difficulties between the characters.
However, the limited character development means the actors don’t always have enough material to take their performances to another level.
Phisk Watch Review
Painted Hearts is a movie with a potentially interesting premise that unfortunately doesn’t go far enough with it.
There are several serious themes here—financial dependence, domestic abuse, infidelity, career struggles, age differences, grief and starting over—but the film touches many of them without exploring them deeply.
The biggest issue is predictability. The story is easy to follow, but it is also easy to anticipate. For a movie approaching two hours, there simply isn’t enough narrative development or surprise to sustain the experience.
The production also needed to do more to visually establish Temilade as an artist. Showing her painting, working on commissions, interacting with clients and struggling to establish herself would have made her character feel much more authentic.
That said, viewers who simply want a straightforward Nollywood relationship drama may still find something to enjoy here. The movie has recognizable relationship problems and some themes that can generate conversation.
But for viewers expecting a layered romantic drama filled with unexpected turns and stronger character development, Painted Hearts may feel underwhelming.

Final Thoughts
Painted Hearts tries to tell a story about a woman discovering that the relationship she planned her future around may no longer be the relationship she wants.
That is a relatable and potentially powerful premise.
Unfortunately, the movie keeps its storytelling relatively safe. The plot is easy to predict, some characters aren’t sufficiently developed, and important parts of Temilade’s life—particularly her career as an artist—are not given enough attention.
The result is a film that has the ingredients for a compelling relationship drama but doesn’t fully develop them.
